On Monday, June 17, 2013 The North Babylon Vol. Fire Company at its monthly meeting honored a local hero for his life saving actions. In the early hours of May 30th the North Babylon Fire Company was alerted to a structure fire at 43 Scott Avenue off of Deer Park Avenue. On arrival we assessed the scene, checked for occupants, located the fire and extinguished the blaze. During our investigation it was learned that if not for the heroic actions of a young man residing at that location, this incident may have ended with a significant loss of life. Dominic Cappellino, a 13 year old boy, alerted his family to the fire as a result of the sounds of the smoke detector. Dominic woke the entire family, made sure of their exit and removed the family pets as well. It is believed that had he not taken these actions the seven children, two adults and several family pets might not be alive today. Chief Thomas Jordan, 1st Asst. Chief Rob Cabano, 2nd Asst. Chief John Caroleo and 3rd Asst. Chief Jim Harrington III presented Dominic with an award for heroism from the Fire Company. Supervisor Rich Schafer and other members of the town board presented Dominic with proclamations and named June 17th "Dominic Cappellino Day" in the Town of Babylon. Supervisor Schafer bestowed the highest award the town gives to this young man. Deputy Commissioner John Jordan of Suffolk County Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services, presented Dominic with the Commissioner's Award on behalf of Comissioner Joseph Williams and County Executive Steve Bellone. All presenters thanked Dominic for his heroism and all look forward to seeing Dominic in the ranks of the fire department some day. All of the members of the North Babylon Fire Company gave Dominic a standing ovation in recognition of A JOB WELL DONE!! |
